The Odd Truth About Odd Shifts

I love people’s reaction when you tell them you work odd/ different hours than day shift. The shock, horror, or grotesque look on their face is priceless with endless remarks and questions.

“How can you handle that?” “Did you ask for that shift?” “Must suck for your family, huh?” “I hated working that shift.”

There are some nice perks to working a different shift than the typical day shift.

I have never had a 9-5 job. When I have worked a “day shift”, it has usually been a 6 am or 7 am start time. I am not a quick person in the morning. A lot of those morning were waking up at 4 am or rushing to get to work on time. Waking up between the hours of 7 and 10 is super nice. It gives you time to slowly eat breakfast, catch up on your news, and watch some cartoons or any other favorite show. If you are a last minute clothes washer, guilty, you have time. There is calmness to the mornings that helps set the mood for the rest of the day.

Who enjoys grocery shopping?

Take a day off work and grocery shop at 8:30 am. It is heaven. There are not a lot of customers in the store to park their carts in your way and the workers haven’t had to deal with small devil children destroying displays yet. Everyone seems polite and the weight of a hard worked day hasn’t crushed spirits yet.  There seems to be a quiet serene feel to the store. It makes the chore of grocery shopping almost pleasant.

The evil Monday morning, everyone’s favorite day to hate.

What does a normal social media Monday morning look like? It is a whirlwind of “Ugh, I don’t want to get up.” “I shouldn’t have stayed out all night.” “They should outlaw work on Mondays.”

Sit back, smile to yourself and sip your coffee while the world rushes by. Monday mornings can become relaxing. There is no worry about the morning rush or waking up late. Late night television on Sundays can be enjoyed without sacrificing hours of sleep. You can stay up to date on trendy shows like Game Of Thrones or The Walking Dead and stay rested.

Working an off shift has some disadvantages, but there can be a world of perks that can be taken advantage of.

  1. 3 November 2017

    I can dig it.

  2. 5 November 2017

I can totally see the appeal of going shopping and running errands when no one is around but I would not be able to shift around my routine that much. And I just can’t get up earlier than 7am and be a pleasant person. Tried that for a job 2 years and never got used to it. So good job and enjoy those quiet moments
